Attention is given not only to the clinical picture, but also to the role substance use or medication has come to play in the person’s life. The consultation establishes the basis for clinical recommendations and ongoing treatment.

Ongoing visits allow care to be assessed over time. Symptoms, cravings, medication response, substance use, functioning, and relevant changes in circumstance are considered together. Psychological and behavioral patterns that may influence craving, substance use, or the experience of treatment are also considered as part of the clinical picture. This broader understanding helps inform decisions about care over time.
