Why Treatment Sometimes Falls Short

Treatment can fail when it treats the addiction and loses sight of the person.

Helping someone stop is important. But stopping is not the same thing as being okay.

If a substance has been helping someone get through anxiety, loneliness, stress, shame, pain, or something else that has become hard to bear, taking it away does not make those things disappear. Sometimes they return with nothing yet in place to help the person manage them differently.

That is where treatment can fall short. It can focus so much on stopping the substance that it forgets to ask what the person is left with afterward.

You cannot take away someone’s source of relief and assume the rest will take care of itself. You cannot ask someone to manage life differently if they have never had another reliable way to do it. And struggling afterward should not be treated as proof that the person failed.

People need more than rules. They need a real way to handle the moments that used to send them looking for relief.

That is part of what recovery has to build.
